Chinese glazed earthenware model of a storehouse. Of rectangular form, the raised structure with overhanging roof and large window with balcony in relief. The side and rear walls are left plain. Sculptures such as these, known as mingqi, were placed in tombs to provide the necessities of life for one in the next world. The lead based glaze, originally bright green, is now silvered due to the leeching of lead to the surface, a reaction that occurs only with chemical reactions to oxides within the burial mound over many centuries. Han Dynasty (206BC 220AD).
