Large seated Burmese lacquer Buddha of exceptional quality and size. Dry lacquer is a technique unique to the Burmese and is achieved by applying spackled mud to a woven facsimile of the figure made of split reed. The figure is then heavily lacquered, carved and gilded. The figure sits cross legged with hands in the Bhumisparsha Mudra (calling the earth to witness). The gesture symbolizes Shakyamuniâs victory over Mara. Late 19th C. Due to the fragile nature of dry lacquer very few pieces of this size survive. The top with slight breaks,, otherwise excellent condition.
