Japanese press molded earthenware figure of Hotei (literally "linen bag"), the god of happiness and prosperity. Hotei with his characteristic large earlobes and large belly is a symbol of wisdom. His treasure bag is resting at his feet. Hotei originating in China as a historical Buddhist priest of the 10th century named Keishi who was called Putai no San (Mr. Linen Bag) because of the sack he carried. Earthenware figures such as this were commonly placed on a kamidana ("god shelf") in a kitchen as an auspicious figure. Traces of pigment remaining. Meiji Period (1868 1912). 23" high x 22" wide.
